In the history of speech recognition software technology, this was the era of ‘baby talk’; only numbers and digits could be comprehended. In 1952, Audrey’ was invented by Bell Laboratories which could only understand numbers. But in 1962, the shoebox’ technology was able to understand 16 words in English.

Whither Speech Recognition— The Sequel. 25 years after J.R. Pierce’s paper was published, the IEEE published a follow-up titled Whither Speech Recognition: the Next 25 Years⁵, authored by two senior employees of Bell Laboratories (the same institution where Pierce worked).

Developments in speech recognition software plateaued for over a decade as technology fought to catch-up to our hopes for innovation. Recognition systems were limited to their processing power and memory, and still had to “guess” what words were being said based on phonemes. Whither Speech Recognition— The Sequel.

Human interest in recognizing and synthesizing speech dates back hundreds of years (at least!) — but it wasn’t until the mid-20th century that our forebears built something recognizable as ASR. Among the earliest projects was a “digit recognizer” called Audrey, created by researchers at Bell Laboratories in 1952.
In 1997, after approximately 20 years of development, the accuracy level of speaker independent directed speech recognition was greater than 95%, giving enterprises the con dence to use it in call centers. Speech recognition has decades of research history associated with it, beginning in the 1970s with DARPA. Later, many major tech companies and research organizations made speech recognition their single most important goal and began their pursuit of a technology so powerful that it can match human speech recognition abilities.
